In an evening that blended pride with inspiration, RUMC held its very first Alumni Awards Ceremony, graced by the presence of H.E. Orla Tunney, Ambassador of Ireland to Malaysia. The event marked a milestone in RUMC’s journey—one that not only celebrated professional achievement but also the heart and humanity behind the work of its graduates. Among the most moving moments was the speech delivered by Dr Durgavasini Devanath, recipient of the RUMC Ambassador Award, who began her remarks by sharing breaking news of a devastating air crash, a sobering reminder of the world she works in every day. Her words were more than a reflection—they were a call to service, drawn from a career spent responding to disasters, outbreaks, and conflict zones across more than 30 countries. Joining the celebration virtually was Dr Teoh Chia Wei, who accepted the Award for Outstanding Excellence in Clinical Skills and Research in Nephrology through a recorded message from Toronto, offering heartfelt thanks and a glimpse into his remarkable journey.

For Dr Durgavasini, Class of 2010, the journey toward global health leadership began early—founding the Youth Red Cross in Ireland and joining humanitarian efforts in Vietnam while still a student. Now with the World Health Organization, she has responded to disasters, conflicts, and disease outbreaks across the globe. Beyond the frontlines, she teaches, mentors, and advocates for ethical, compassionate care in crisis settings. Across the globe in Canada, Dr Teoh Chia Wei, Class of 2006, has been a leading figure in paediatric nephrology. As Medical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at SickKids, his work spans clinical care, research, and education—shaping national policy and training future specialists.

Both recipients left an indelible impression—not just for what they have accomplished, but for what they represent. Their journeys remind us that medicine extends far beyond the pages of textbooks; it lives in the quiet courage to serve, the relentless pursuit of knowledge, and the wisdom to act with humanity in the face of uncertainty. Their stories are just the tip of the iceberg. Dr Durgavasini and Dr Teoh were selected from a pool of seven shortlisted alumni, each with their own remarkable contributions, each deserving of recognition in their own right. Together, they reflect the rich and diverse impact of the RUMC alumni community—a network driven not only by skill and intellect, but by a shared belief in making a difference.
